[Tutorial] Introduction to design elements. Index

The Red Tower by Giorgio de Chirico. Oil on canvas, 1913. Guggenheim Museum

Graphic design can be seen as a form of communication: the designer constructs a message through the tools available to them, and the end user receives the message when viewing the design.

This tutorial is about those tools used to construct the overall message of the design: the design elements, basic components into which any visual design or work of art can be deconstructed into.

The elements of design are:

Point or mark Line
Form, shape and space Movement
Pattern Color
Texture

You will learn to see these elements in a design, as well as convey messages through them. Think of it as of learning a new, visual language.
